Notes on Afyon Kilim/Kilims

Afyon Kilim from Ed Krayer

Afyon is now more commonly called Afyonkarahisar. Afyon means opium and kara hisar is Turkish for black castle. The blak castle is a major landmark in Afyonkarahisar. Afyon is east of Usag (Ushak) and north of Salar. The area had a significant significant Turkmen population going back to Seljuk times and Salar takes it name from the Turkmen tribe that we know as the Salor of Turkmenistan and the Salghurids of Fars. Afyon is historically the center of the Turkish opium region and gains special importance because it is at the hub of the old caravan routes from Ankara to Izmir and from Istanbul to Antalya which today are major highways.
