Lot Description
AN AKSARAY KILIM
CENTRAL ANATOLIA, 18TH CENTURY
The ivory field with two columns of polychrome large hooked panels containing lozenges and minor motifs flanking a central column of hooked lozenges, decorated skirt at each end, remains of crenellated border at each side, localised damages, backed
13ft. x 3ft.4in. (396cm. x 102cm.)

Lot Notes
This is probably the oldest kilim in the collection. Although it probably originally had a border running along each side, its lack probably enhances the power of the strongly coloured motifs. A very similar example, but complete with border, was exhibited in Germany (B. Frauenknecht: Early Turkish Tapestries, Nürnberg, 1984, pl.49). Half of another similar kilim is in the McCoy Jones Collection (C. Cootner: The Caroline and H. McCoy Jones Collection, San Francisco, 1990, pl.39, p.163).
