CATALOGUE NOTE
The rug is one of a small group of East Caucasian
rugs woven on a silk foundation. It is so fine
that it was incorrectly catalogued as a Senna
prayer rug when it was sold in 1976. A very
simliar example also with a design of a
blossom-filled trellis and yellow prayer arch was
once in the collection of the Yale University Art
Gallery, sold in these rooms on May 31, 1986, lot
7 and is now in the collection of James Burns,
see Burns, James D., The Caucasus: Traditions in
Weaving, Seattle, 1987, pl. 7. Another related
example, with the blossoms following a V pattern
as in this and the Burns piece, is illustrated in
Kaffel, Ralph, Caucasian Prayer Rugs, London,
1998, pl. 94, and one of similar design on a wool
foundation is in Herrmann, Eberhart, Seltene
Orientteppiche IX, Munich, 1987, pl. 37.Seen
