CATALOGUE NOTE
Knot density: vertical 14-15/cm
horizontal 11-12/cm
Whilst not inscribed, the present lot closely relates in
quality with another shawl piece signed by the
master weaver, Ustad Ali Kirmani, see,
Sothebys London, 9 January 1980, lot 39, inscribed
Ordered by Reza Muhammad Khan Dilbaghani from the
factory of the Master Weaver Ali of Kerman. The
flatter arrangement of plants in the composition of the
field of this above-mentioned piece lack the sense of
depth found in the present lot, illustrated by the
distance created between the cropped band of flowers in
the foreground, against the blue-green background of the
landscape. The two pieces, however, are characterised by
the same fineness of the drawing, both in the compact
profusion of boteh and flower heads in the spandrels and
borders, and in the naturally rendered shrubs and
flowering plants in the field.
For examples of carpets with almost identical (although
mirror-imaged) shawl design fields and borders, please
see; Sothebys Geneva, 14 November 1980, lot 80 and
Sothebys Dubai, 5 December, 1985, lot 85. For other
related examples by Ustad Ali Kirmani with different
field designs, see; Sothebys 24 April 1991, lot 205
and Sothebys 21 October 1992, lot 134.
