Quchan Kurdish saddlebag from Razavi Khorasan

This is a Kurdish saddlebag from the Quchan area of Razavi Khorasan Province Iran. The Kurds were settled there circa 1600 in the reign of Shah Abbas the Great. They were settled south of the Kopet Dagh Ridge.

Size: 1 foot 7 inch by 3 foot 9 inch.

Structure: Flat weave with twining.

Yarn Spin: Z.

Warp: 2 ply tan wool.

Weft: Floating with surface twinning tan wool.

Pile: Flat weave

Ends: Folded over stitch.

Selvages: Single cord plain tan and blue wool joined by buttonhole stitch brown wool.

Handle: Soft, pliable, durable.
